Chapter Twenty-Six

Consumed with frustration, Maggie climbed into the Tahoe, closed her eyes, and leaned against the headrest as she fought back tears.

How could she save her former boss? And if there was a serial killer loose in her city, how could she stop him before he struck again?

She was trying so hard and getting nowhere. Romano was so in denial, he thought everyone would see him as innocent based on his years of service, because of who he was, or had been. He ought to know better, but he wasn’t thinking straight. He was still in shock.

How could he be anything else? It had only been twenty-four hours since he’d come home and found his wife dead. Or had stabbed her himself after an argument.

Just as she felt herself about to break down, her cell hummed. It was a text from Bryce.

I’ll be working late tonight. Angie is at your mother’s.

She let out a sad sigh. Now she felt even more miserable. She longed to talk to Bryce about this case, longed to tell him her thoughts, her fears, her deepest emotions, to feel his comforting arms around her.

Then she remembered something he’d said to her once.

That they were both workaholics. Vigilant, relentless workaholics, he’d called them. It had sounded nice at the time. It had given her comfort. But right now, a relationship with a workaholic just sounded hollow.

Even if she was one herself. That wasn’t fair, she knew. If she wanted to talk to him, she should call him.

She stared at his number on her cell, considering it.

But it was late. Bryce was either working or asleep. He probably had to be in court tomorrow. No, she wouldn’t bother him.

Instead she headed back to headquarters, picked up her laptop, and drove to her mother’s house.

At the front door she let herself in with her key.

As she made her way through the empty living room, she could feel the Virgin Mary table clock on the credenza scowling at her.

Her beloved mentor was about to be charged with a quadruple homicide and there was nothing she could do to stop it. What was the penance for that?

She heard her mother in the kitchen and headed that way.

She found the slight woman at the stove in an apron, scooping soup from a pot into a bowl. “You are working late, Magdalene.”

“I’ve got a difficult case.” She kissed her mother’s cheek.

“I’ve kept some dinner warm for you.”

“Thanks.” Maggie didn’t feel like eating, but she knew she needed the fuel. And that her mother wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Her mother set the bowl on the kitchen table and fetched a spoon as Maggie sat down. This was where she’d eaten so many meals with her sister when they were kids and her father had been working late. The memory made her warm and sad at the same time. She was following in his footsteps.

“Is that the case I’ve been seeing on the television?” her mother said. “The one with the police lieutenant?”

Maggie took the spoon her mother handed her.
